Retired investment banker turned successful cookbook author Mattie Carrington is hard at work on her third book when strange "accidents" warn her something is dangerously wrong. She narrowly escapes being burned to a crisp when her kitchen explodes, and then someone tries to poison her. Luckily, Mattie has friends in high places -- namely Pine County sheriff Cas Larkin and retired schoolteachers Miss Mayme and Miss Minnie Anderson, who run the small town's flower shop.

The sheriff is doubly worried when Mattie rents a secluded cabin to finish her book. He's beginning to spot a connection to Mattie's near-death experiences and the dangerous person behind them. He's got more "help" than he needs from the eagle-eyed locals, including a faith healer and a psychic, but he's up against an experienced killer with the patience and the skill to watch...and wait.
