"I swung my ax, chopping again and again until I had broken through a wooden lid. Pulling away from the shards, I sliced into the canvas wrappers to expose the bricks of tea, my father working alongside me. When either of us finished hacking a chest, we'd help each other push the debris to the edge of the ship to heave it over the side. Each and every time there came a loud splash, a sound that pleased me to no end.
More and more tea chests were brought on deck. Sweat streamed down my face and back; blisters formed on my palms and my arms ached, but I never felt better. I was thrilled with every blow of my axe of war, proud that our act of insurrection was being carried out on behalf of all those who believed--all those who had died--in the name of liberty.
After the raiders carried up the last few chests from the hold, Chief Pitts, and Pa met at the edge of the deck and spoke briefly before beckoning to me and two other boys near my age. Pitts pointed down at chests that had piled up in the quiet waters below the ship. “Climb down onto the flats,” he whispered, “and destroy all the crates half-submerged in the shallows.”
So we slipped over the side and dropped onto the wet sands. Already shivering, we waded into ice-cold water that burned like wet fire. Wielding our taxes, we splintered the chests and kicked the wreckage into deeper water before climbing back up to the pier and regaining the ship.
There we found Mohawks sweeping the deck, brushing the loose tea into the sea. Many had removed their jackets and shoes to shake out stray leaves that were also swept up and over the side. I joined in by cleaning out my shoes and pulling my pockets inside out. There was a purpose in this: all of us were resolved to prevent even the smallest measure of tea from being carried off the ship."
