The companions learn the doom of Athelwynne: his soul is trapped in an Egyptian Memory Box, and Anubis is forcing the Seer to illuminate the City of the Gods, darkened as the divinities of ancient Egypt endure their hopeless Winter. The companions journey to rescue him, but their only safe path lies through a series of difficult challenges, each a city dedicated to one Egyptian god or goddess, and only knowledge of their divine stories can save them. Sadly, rivalries have escalated into open war: Phil against Nate, Nate against Sister Aspertine, Eloise against Roselyn, and everyone against Alarika. All stand ready to sunder the company, although each knows that they could never survive alone. The Duat, the fiery tunnel of demons, awaits like a hungry beast, ready to open and devour them into its inescapable depths, should any of them fail or quit. Yet the gods themselves stand divided. Ra, Horus, and Nut rejoice in their coming, while Thoth, Isis, and others disdain their presence. However, Anubis staunchly refuses their admittance, and determines to stop them at any cost. The companions have no choice but to continue striving, to avoid eternal doom in the Duat, but their only path leads them straight into the domain of an angry god, Anubis, the God of Darkness, against whose ire the companions can't win.
