Before the trouble begins, Warm Creek looks like a community where anyone would very much want to live. Then Dave Kerchival, ramrod of War Hatchet, rides in and interferes with the three Ballards who are threatening Bill Yeager about his Lazy Y ranch that gives the other ranchers access to the summer graze. The Ballards are the nephews of Abel Hendron, the owner of War Hatchet, who wants that access closed. Dave stops the rough-housing, but his action only infuriates his boss, Abel. That night, Bill Yeager is shot. Although fatally wounded, he makes it back to town and dictates a last will, leaving the Lazy Y to Dave. When Abel learns of Dave's interference with the Ballards, he fires Dave. And when he hears of Dave's inheritance, it becomes clear that this will mean war between War Hatchet and his former ramrod.
