Beautiful Amy Matthews should have been the happiest girl in the world. She had a good job as publicity assistant at Golden State Pictures and was engaged to marry the company's biggest star, handsome Rolf Adams. She tries to convince herself that she is happy, but doubts keep cropping up. Suddenly Rolf seems so selfish, so insincere.

When Lord Enterprises, headed by the enigmatic Steven Lord, takes over the studio, Amy is assailed by fresh doubts. Temporarily promoted to head the publicity department, Amy is overworked, her nerves frayed from having to cater to Rolf's constant, petulant bids for attention and deal with the inexplicable hostility of the attractive Mr. Lord. For some reason he has taken an instant dislike to her, a dislike that increases when Amy befriends his six-year-old motherless daughter, Amanda.

Amy knows that she should not become involved with the Lords and their problems, but she sympathizes deeply with the lonely little girl. While Rolf is in her thoughts little, the Lords, both father and daughter, are in her mind often. Misunderstandings and arguments mar Amy's relationship with her new boss, whose temper causes him to lash out at her thoughtlessly.

The only man who wants nothing but Amy's happiness is her beloved uncle, Henry Matthews, who watches helplessly while she tries to make some sense of the tangle of her life.
