It was once considered a loose alliance of criminal elements that were structured and governed by a strict code of silence. It had enacted a campaign of near utter lawlessness and extreme violence in Sicily around the 15th century and was often tied together by a blood oath and sworn secrecy... The Mafia was first constructed inside of Italy's Sicily in order to build a defense and protect the lands and property of the Land Lords who weren't present. However, by the 19th century, the structure had become a network of criminals that had come together to over throw the Sicilian country side. These members were bound together by what was called 'OMERTA'... A strict, unbreakable code of conduct that advocates avoiding all contact and co-operation with the authorities. The Mafia didn't have a central organized structure. It consisted of many small groups which were autonomous within their own area. Sometime in the 19th century, members of the Mafia immigrated to the United States and soon were knee deep in American Organized Crime. A lot of Americans stepped into the media at times to down play the power and influence of the Mafia. Some have even gone as far as to deny the existence of a Black Mafia completely...
