It was in Constantinople, capital of the eastern Roman Empire, that tribune Probos Antonius found the one woman he wanted but could not have -- Olympia, a beautiful and devout Christian. The barrier between them was a secret from his bloodstained past that could neither be forgotten nor forgiven.

As the Empire slowly crumbled around the tormented lovers -- both from savage border attacks and from moral decay within the Imperial Court -- Probos met the new archbishop, who first offered hope to them but then incurred the wrath of the royal family.
