The previous novel Fog looked back a half-century at the Californians of the mid-1950's. Padre Serra's residents then seemed to have had a sophomoric grasp of the reality of the world. A belief that they'd done what needed to be done and had earned the right to some introverted regional isolationism. It was time to raise a family based on conservative values and a 'manana' sense of time the region had inherited from the Spanish. This story depicts people trying to cope with the new post Sputnik world reality in two very different ways. Some will see the nascent coalition between the cultural preservationist and environmentalists taking shape. Others will see a clash of traditional social and opportunistic corporate values. I've chosen to broadly lump them into either preservationists or futurists. Eli Mann would never be have been seen wearing the green mantle of the environmentalist's tie-dyed T-shirt. Nor would the ranching Ross family likely have ever worn the corporate uniform of black wing tips footing a pinstriped gray suit. The civil war that breaks out between the preservationists and the futurists is fought using the emerging media of television, in the courts and in company boardrooms. The sides differ as to whether the ever-present past is either the foundation for the future or best condensed into museum displays. By the end of 1963, because of the imposition on their lives of events that led up to this conflict, many of the real people of the Central California coast must have felt that they just wanted to put the future behind them."Excerpt From: Dean Caldwell.
