Six months before, dark-haired Tracy Crandall had fled from her nursing duties at the Indian hospital on Youncalla Reservation to a hospital in San Francisco, where she hoped to forget that the man she loved had become engaged to a wealthy socialite. Tracy suspected that her part-Indian heritage had come between her and Dr. David Miles, but she was proud of her Paiute background in spite of losing David.

Now on a long-needed vacation in the ski resort area of Pine Valley, Nevada, not far from Youncalla, Tracy was startled to discover that David was now practicing in the Health Center at Pine Valley, owned and operated by the father of his fiancee, Pam. A slight accident kept Tracy off the slopes, but not out of sight of the handsome blond ski instructor, Gar Zetterling, about whom David had warned Tracy to keep away from because of his man-about-town behavior. She was more distressed about seeing David again than learning about Gar, and so she took refuge in the company of red-haired Dr. Ken Scott, a fun-loving Irishman with an amazing charm and an overwhelming compassion for the Indians' plight at Youncalla.

It was Ken who persuaded Tracy to accompany him on his visits to the reservation hospital, and it was while assisting him on a case that she began to reevaluate her feelings for him. But Tracy had not told him that she was part Paiute, and she soon became fearful that he too would leave her if he knew the truth.
