When her fiance, Manhattan physician Mark Landon, insisted that she give up her nursing career after they married, Marci Westerlund broke the engagement. A need to sort out her tangled emotions prompted her to pay a long-overdue visit to her aunt Millicent on Pelican Island off the coast of Georgia. She had not seen her aunt for years, and she assumed that the elderly, probably feeble woman could benefit from a nurse's companionship and solicitude.

A vibrant, athletic woman, Millicent Page attacked her chores and hobbies with equal zeal, leaving Marci with time on her hands--time that fair-haired Stewart Lyons was happy to fill. A wealthy and most eligible bachelor, Stewart divided his time between business trips and relaxation at Shalimar, his palatial estate on Pelican. Although Stewart was good company, Marci felt a vague dissatisfaction with the idle, pleasure seeking life-style he encouraged. So when Cameron Forrester, the only physician on the island, offered her a part-time job, she accepted with reservations.

Not only did the doctor's rugged manliness make her uneasy, but Cam expected her to utilize her professional abilities to the maximum and bear responsibilities at the shoestring clinic she would not have dreamed of assuming in a fully-staffed metropolitan hospital. Furthermore, she didn't know what to make of Cam's reserved attitude toward her. Did it have to do with the hostility Julann Davis, his lovely gypsy-haired assistant, harbored against her?

Marci would have her answers--but only after a crisis on the island brought the acid test of her ingenuity and nursing skills.
