Although Liza Hale had the appearance, the voice and the acting ability to purpose a successful career on the stage, and although she had a normal woman's desire for a happy home with a loving husband, she put both of these possibilities aside, at least for the time being, while she won her R.N. and then accepted a special assignment to help her qualify as a psychiatric nurse.

Her busman's holiday in a country home where Liza was assisting a dedicated psychologist as he wrote a book about his clinical findings gave the nurse further insight into problems of the emotionally disturbed. This was supplemented by several cases which she happened to observe first hand and decided to treat on her own.

Whereupon Liza discovered that a little knowledge may be dangerous even when not in the hands of fools, and that emotions are not always the best guide when making professional judgments.

“I'm so Frightened!”

The terrified girl who had appeared out of the night at Liza's door clung to her, sobbing.

“Please,” Liza said, “try to tell me what's the matter.”

“The noises,” the girl said, “As if someone was tearing down the house. It's haunted! But my husband won't believe me. He thinks I'm…”

Psychiatric Nurse Liza Hale thought she knew what lay behind her lovely neighbor's panic -- the tragedy of mental illness. But the truth was stranger and more sinister -- and, disregarding the warning of the young doctor who loved her, Liza soon found herself in a maze of mystery and menace…with no way out!
