Ann Galloway, jilted by the man she was to marry, takes a job as nurse-governess to a small boy whose young and handsome father, Giles Perriam, teaches at the French University at El Regadir. Giles is a widower. His first wife, Selma, who was an actress in a film company, was lost on location some years ago and is thought to be dead.
Gradually he and Ann find themselves falling in love, but Giles, giving no reason, tries to hold Ann off. She is puzzled and distressed. Was there any truth in the old rumur â€" which Ann comes to hear about â€" that his first wife had been mixed up with the death of the film director, which would give her good reason for wishing to be presumed dead? The story moves dramatically to a surprising climax and keeps the reader in suspense until the very end.
