Not Under the Law
After the death of her beloved Aunt Mary, Joyce Radway was treated harshly by her cousin, Gene, and his family. They took advantage of her kind and humble nature, expecting her to cook, clean, and serve. Joyce knew that her only chance to gain independence was to earn her living as a schoolteacher. Therefore, when her selfish relatives forbade her to take her examinations, she had no alternative but to leave home.

Setting out with no destination, few belongings, and little cash, Joyce had to trust God completely to provide for her. Her faith was rewarded immediately as He protected her from evil bootleggers and led her safely to the village of Silverton. He blessed Joyce further by providing a cozy little house, caring neighbors, and a teaching job.

Joyce enjoyed her life in Silverton for over a year, but one day her happiness was shattered when by chance she read a newspaper from her old hometown. Much to her horror, she discovered that Darcy Sherwood, a childhood companion, had been arrested for her abduction and murder. She thought about his winsome smile and gentle manner and grieved that anyone would ever think he would commit such a crime. She departed quickly for Meadow Brook, but feared that she would be too late because the paper was two weeks old. Had Darcy gone to jail, or worse still, been electrocuted, for the heinous crime he allegedly committed?
