During the exciting era of the Harlem Renaissance, Maddie and Roy find themselves drawn to each other by their love of music. Maddie, a gifted high school soprano, longs to become a classical singer. Roy, a talented musician, wants her to sing with his band. Fate separates the pair as Maddie goes to Paris to further her musical career and Roy finds work in a Harlem nightclub. From Harlem's Sugar Hill to Paris' Left Bank, to the south side of Chicago, their paths cross and diverge.
