It had been the mistake of an impetuous, naïve young girl dazzled by the praise of a handsome man for her beauty and talents. It had been a disastrous marriage that had ended in less than a day when, in rage, Meade Winton had left his bride, only to die in a plane crash.

Sublimely happy now as the wife of Tom Wycoff and the mother of his three children, Susan had almost forgotten that first marriage, and she had never told anyone about it. So it was a threat as well as a shock when a ghost appeared at the Wycoff's summer house, a ghost who was no other than Meade Winton himself. In horror, Susan wondered how he had survived that plane crash, and why he had come to the lake. In alarm, she suspected that the purpose was blackmail.

Susan had no tears when shortly after his arrival, Meade Winton was found murdered, but whatever relief she felt quickly turned to fear when she learned that Meade had divulged their secret. Logically, she was the prime suspect. That the other suspects were Tom, for the same reason, then, for different reasons, his and Susan's best friends at the lake was small comfort.
