Justice Cameron Scott has a problem. Assigned to write the opinion in the biggest serial murder case in San Angelo history, he finds something in the record that convinces him of the defendant's innocence and to suspect a frameup by the current governor and one of Justice Scott's fellow judges. But he knows his colleagues will consider what he found to be only "harmless error" and judicial ethics bar him from personally investigating the case. How he chooses to work around that prohibition endangers his career, his son's life, and as the investigation twists and turns toward the real killer, his own survival.
