When the body of a political operative is found in a local cemetery, the team of Nelly McCarthy, Jack Crawford and Noah Amos are called upon to solve the crime. Nelly McCarthy is a young attorney. Both men are retired and in their seventies. The bagman of the title is a businessman who has taken advantage of the political system of the city of Fall River to serve politicians in a number of illegal ways. This story involves exposing the insider's tricks as well as revealing the character of the man acting as a bagman. The story takes place mainly in Fall River, Massachusetts, which is centrally located between Boston, Providence, Newport and Cape Cod. The city is typical of the old New England industrial cities that have seen better days. The author is a lifelong resident of the city and has been deeply involved in its politics.
