"I have a feeling, dear ma'am, that it is not completely for her own benefit that you have summoned Melinda from America," said Lord Kenaird.

"Indeed it is for her own sake," the Duchess of Mendham replied. "I intend to turn her into a young lady of fashion and a suitable wife for Denton. There is no doubt she can become accustomed to life here and understand the advantages of becoming a duchess, in spite of having to marry Denton to gain the title."

Spirited and attractive Melinda Draycort was bound to enjoy her social season. Lord Kenaird always seemed to be there to instruct her in the fine points of London society. He disturbed her, but she had no time to think about him because of Denton.

Denton's proposal of marriage took Melinda completely by surprise. He was persistent -- he couldn't believe that Melinda hadn't any interest in finding a husband.
