Alex Trova has been working for the Bounty Hunters Guild for a long time. He's one of their best, despite what his boss might say about him. But he doesn't hunt people. The Bounty Hunters Guild spans multiple worlds, and it enforces the rules and boundaries set forth by the Council in Haven. Alex hunts the supernatural. He's as bad at politics as he is good at hunting though, and Alex finds himself doing scut work pro bono to make up for past screw ups. What starts out as a miserable trip out to the middle of nowhere to find a lost pet turns into one of the most dangerous jobs he's ever taken when he gets attacked by a swarm of monstrous insects.

Alone, under equipped, and with a tight time table running against him, Alex has to stop a voracious conglomerate of creatures known as the hive before they overrun the area, killing and eating everyone and everything. If that happens, the hive will spread out of control, multiplying and swarming across the entire continent. Even if he manages to nip that, he still has to solve the mystery of how a hive had ever formed in the first place, and who or what is behind the whole thing. Problem upon problem piles up on him as he struggles to balance local authorities, an overbearing doctor and her hero-worshiping brother, his own personal vices, and vivid nightmares about his own past.
