Honey-haired April was recommended to the wealthy Mrs. Eckman as a nurse who would not only be efficient but would be gentle on the eyes, a cheerful adjunct to the life of an elderly invalid. And Nurse April lived up to her sparkling name from the first day she met and fell in love with the dainty little old lady on her palatial ocean-front estate--Casa Luna.

It appeared to April that she was the only person who cared whether Mrs. Eckman was happy or not. There was an absent grandson, Jimmy, whom the old lady obviously adored; her son and daughter-in-law, who paid duty calls only on her; her younger son's widow, Nina, a Frenchwoman who, longing to return to France, considered it a great hardship to remain in a cottage on the grounds of the Florida estate.

Then--in the mysterious tunnel about which April had heard before coming to Casa Luna--April met Kurt Kimberly, and knew that someone else was fond of her invalid patient. Kurt was to remain in hiding at Casa Luna for some time--working to free his Cuban countrymen. For Kurt, who had spent much of his boyhood at Casa Luna, had spent his mature years on his father's plantation in Cuba and now thought of himself as a Cuban.

Kurt's secret operations are to bring April close to danger. And they are to cause an open break between Kurt and Jimmy Eckman, with whom April has entered into a make-believe engagement to make her invalid patient thing that her daydreams are coming true.

As the climax approaches, Kurt appears openly at Mrs. Eckman's eighty-fifth birthday party--and from then on, biuts of a puzzle gradually fall into place in this exciting story of a nurse, who, against her will, accepts a "luxury" assignment.
