About This Book

Sofi, a young Viennese woman, has recently lost her parents, and then her fiancé, Karl. She moves to a remote village. Through her poetry she attempts to recover. Terence, veteran of World War I, appears, and begins a novel. Sofi soon disappears, leaving only her poetry. Her twin sister, Sara, publishes it to tempt her back. An artist, Seamus, using Sara, paints her image for the cover. Terence claims an inheritance in Paris and meets Hannah a journalist from Vienna and they fall in love. Sofi, in Paris, finds the book of poetry with the cover by Seamus. She admires his other work and dreams about a relationship, then returns with Terence and Hannah to Vienna to look for him. On the eve of the German occupation of Vienna, Terence completes his novel. Sofi is rescued from a riot by Seamus, and they return to the fishing village.
