The last thing Linda Moore expected -- or wanted -- as a college graduation present from her Aunt Hattie was a rundown gift shop that was Midvale's best known "white elephant." But Linda knew she couldn't refuse the shop -- not without breaking sick old Aunt Hattie's heart. Still, what about her own heart? Taking over the shop meant putting off her marriage to handsome young Professor Karl Rollins -- and Karl didn't like to be put off. Although there was something familiar about her, Linda couldn't place the customer. Then she introduced herself.
"Miss Moore," Mrs. Wheeler said, smiling. "I'm here to make use of that bridal gift registry you operate. Her finace is one of the teachers at State. You probably know him too...Karl Rollins?"
Stunned, Linda said, yes, she knew Professor Rollins...how nice for Tess... She said all the proper things, while inside her something curled up and died.
