Krista Lindstrom is a loyal Colonist. But when she finds Scotsman Lt. Gavin Duncan wounded, she offers her help and tends to his wounds. There is, of course, intense hatred between the two factions during the American Revolution, and Krista doesn't want anyone to know she gave aid to the enemy. Gavin has many enemies, however, as he incurred the wrath of his own men when he shot some prisoners, unable to see them tortured any longer. Incensed by her step-father, who doesn't hesitate to be abusive, Krista has enemies of her own. And when Gavin later shows up at their inn, Krista and Gavin soon find themselves forced to marry, due to her manipulative step-father. But Krista is determined not to have anything to do with a man in a skirt, and Gavin has difficulty seeing Krista, in her manly clothes and unbathed state, as a desirable woman. Then, just as they overcome their differences, fate intervenes and separates them in the cruelest of circumstances. But fate makes amends when Gavin finds not only his wife, but a son as well. It is not until the war is over that the lovers are reunited in London, but still old enemies are a threat, and only the strength of their love will help them overcome the many forces that have attempted to keep them apart.
