It's Gene's retirement day: he is starting a new life, in a new body. Every sixty-five years, Gene pays a visit to the nearest Next Time Clinic to clone himself.

As he gathers up synaptic impressions, ready for download to fresh neurons, the day takes a turn for the worse. The most anticipated day of his life is interrupted by an invasion: armored brutes intent on disintegrating the populace appear in the city. Gene is furious; he won't abide anything standing in his way today.

Despite the chaos--the government declares martial law and communication is interrupted--Gene makes his way to the clinic, memory discs in hand. All is well until his car is nearly blown up and Gene is forced to find his way on foot through the rubble-strewn streets.

After surviving a close encounter with one of the invaders, Gene makes it to the clinic. Reluctantly, the doctor agrees to clone Gene. Only after does Gene learn that the invaders are targeting young people only--those capable of reproduction.

In a desperate rush to escape, Gene scrambles through the city to find an evacuation route. The situation is dire; the military is shuttling people off the planet. As Gene boards a ship, he wonders if this will be his last time alive. A fellow passenger gives Gene some news that sends him into hysterics. Maybe this is his last next time.
