Prudence Foster and Cecily Roundtree are cousins, but of very different backgrounds. Raised on a Texas cattle ranch, Prue comes to Pennsylvania when her father is transferred to a subsidiary of the ranch to do research on grass. This brings the Fosters near to the Roundtrees' Main Line home in Bryn Mewr. But when Prue gets an invitation to Cissy's debut, she doesn't want to go -- for several reasons. She has no interest in huge social affairs, and her mare, Feather, is about to have her first foal.

Prue's mother insists on her going to the party -- and she does -- but not without misgivings and a sort of “poor relation” feeling. Arriving at Cissy's home a few days before the debut, she finds it difficult to fit into the life there -- although a neighbor of Cissy's Colin Grey, helps her to enjoy the party. There is a tragic aftermath to the debut when Cissy's older sister, Lea, telephones from Holland that her aviator husband has been killer. Mr. and Mrs. Roundtree fly to Holland immediately, and Cissy comes to the ranch with Prue.

Now it is Cissy's turn to fit into a new and different way of life. Though still recoving from the shock of her brother-in-law's death, she sets out to learn about ranch life -- to ride horseback and do her share of the chores. Prue admires her spirit, thoughtfulness, and courage, and the two girls become close friends.
