When, fresh from training college, Cathy Mellor is appointed infants teacher at Mellstone village school, she is immediately embroiled in village politics during disturbing events following an autumn gale. Struggling to please the headmistress, Karen Bryer, she is also falling in love with a local forestry student. Karen's love life, too, becomes hopelessly mixed up with that of Elisabeth Turner, the newly-arrived artist planning to start a new life in Mellstone with her young adopted daughter, Jenny.
