Into Darkness by B.A. Savage is amongst the best mystery novels of the summer of 2014, it is an amazing locked room mystery. It is exciting and fast-paced, highly recommended for the fans of whodunit style mystery stories and detective fiction. It gives an authentic picture of the routine style and power games of detectives, as well as the details of an investigation, and it offers a strange enigma to solve. Like the best mystery novels, Into Darkness by B.A. Savage boasts a great detective. The main character, a rotund detective, Alex French, happens to be the protagonist of a series written about Alex French's investigating strange crimes. For those who meet this character for the first time, it turns out soon that Detective French is a happy, friendly man who has a good heart and a brilliant mind, he is extremely observant and perceptive. In this Into Darkness by B.A. Savage, Alex French deals with his bad-tempered colleagues and, of course, an odd murder case, committed by an elusive shooter. A man named Dalton is shot in the neck in his home, and he dies within a couple of minutes. His neighbors claim that they could hear three shots at the night Dalton was killed, however, the detectives could find only one bullet in the locked room where they found him, the killing bullet, embedded in the victim's neck. The room has no windows, and the door was closed from inside when someone shot down Dalton. There was no killing weapon to be seen when the detectives arrived. Whoever shot Dalton to death, he or she did not leave tracks and disappeared without a trace. The neighbors, hearing the shots, appeared in front of the house right then, but they could not see anyone leaving. They only saw some smoke hovering in front of Dalton's home. Is it a perfect crime? Or did the perp make any mistake that would let French find him or her? B.A. Savage is a gifted contemporary author. Just like his protagonist, Alex French, Savage's prose is simple, nice and likable, yet effective. It makes Into Darkness by B.A. Savage one of the best mystery novels of the recent years. Into Darkness is one of the first works of the writer. With this book, the author has added a distinctive new character to the modern detective fiction. Alex French is different than your neo noir style Grim Reaper detective, he is fun and affable. He does not look like movie stars, which makes him more real. Alex French is like an actual person. The other characters are also three-dimensional and real. The description of the murder and the investigation is authentic. The story is riveting and well-crafted. Into Darkness by B.A. Savage, one of the best mystery novels that has been published lately, is a great choice for anyone who enjoys light and entertaining locked room mysteries. It is an interesting summer read.
