When Marnie Deene, an attractive young American girl, unexpectedly gets the chance to visit her friend Beth in New Zealand, it seems like a dream come true. Beth is an ex-Field Service Scholar who stayed with Marnie's family in Arizona, and the girls are so close they think of themselves as sisters.

Nothing could match Marnie's excitement as she travels halfway around the world to see Beth, who is now married and expecting a baby. One the plane, Marnie meets Alana Vondermeyer, a rich, self-assured young woman who is traveling to New Zealand to discover the identity of a mysterious, life-long correspondent.

But Marnie's thrilling vacation turns into a nightmare when she is mistaken for Alana--they are both redheads--kidnapped, and taken to a crumbling old house at Haunted Inlet.

The house at the inlet lives up to its promise. The bay is haunted, the house is haunted, and Marnie finds something even stranger than the ghost who stands at the foot of her bed. In the supernatural elements of the bay, she finds assurance and sympathetic understanding. The ghost yacht that sails placidly even on the wildest seas plays a vital part in her adventure, as does Peter Marsh, and attractive young man who loves the sea and who has become embittered because of an unhappy love affair.

Against all common sense, Marnie finds herself falling in love with him. But does he love her? Can she trust him? And can she believe that whispered assurance from the ghost that her life will be saved?
