Excerpt

Without the Reigh, he'd been only half alive. From the moment he was born Vlad had subconsciously reached out to the Reigh and found nothing. All of his life he had known the feeling of emptiness and it had gnawed at him. He'd been an angry, bitter, resentful child and not known why. Part of reading and watching all those stories had been his own search for a spark of light to brighten that emptiness. As a child he would not have seen the wonder of this place. Perhaps he would have been fascinated by the history, but it would not have been able to touch him.

Just as impossible now that he had the Reigh too. A Knight was no less a freak. One to be killed on sight at that.

Parts of the facade began to peel away for him. Scores of people walked by that statue. He was the only one who looked. Sweating tourist or coolly composed native, no one looked at the statue.

The truth hit him like a rock between the eyes.

No one was looking because no one wanted to see it. These people didn't want to remember the history that their city was founded upon. They were afraid. Afraid that if they didn't deny the past the Hunters and the Blackblades would make them pay. Afraid that one day the Harrowers would come back and make them pay for turning their backs. Afraid to cast their past aside and move on because what would they be without it? Wizard society was held together by fear.

Once they had been soldiers, now they were mice cowering in their holes. Those parents back at the park hadn't been having a day of carefree gossip. They had been enjoying their children while they could. Before they entered the adult world and learned fear.
