Clarinda flees to Harrogate with her cousin, Sarah, to escape marriage to an elderly peer. For greater safety Sarah dresses as a man, but this does not prevent a highwayman from accosting them. Although Sarah shoots and wounds him, he manages to capture them both and force Sarah to accompany him on some odd expeditions, where the money or jewels of his victims seem to hold little interest for him.
