This is a prequel to Four, Josie D. and to Third Time Not a Charm. They all feature Josie Du Puy as one of the lead characters if not THE lead character. In this book she grows up, finds interests, finds police work, finds that she loves being a cop, becomes a homicide detective and then loses that job when she closely survives a shooting that changes her life for a time. Not being satisfied with sitting at home every day as many young women are not in today's world she decides, along with her husband who is the narrator of much of this story, to go back to work. She finds a job in the Maricopa County Forensic Center. And that job leads her to become involved in an outbreak of Hanta Virus. The outbreak is not only extremely difficult to deal with for Josie but for others she meets as well. It becomes a nationwide menace, then infects not only Josie but the CDC doc she is working with as well. Fortunately by that moment in the story she and the doc obtain doses of an antidote that will cure thousands. From there where will she go? Will she again become a homicide detective? Well of course that is true and you must read Four Josie D. to find out about that.
