Life in quincy, Illinois, suits Rachel just fine but her father Nate envisions a better furture for their family in Oregon City. All too soon the Butlers have joined a wagon train and are traveling the legendary Oregon Trail.
Their journey becomes a trail of hardships and tears as cholera, and weather extremes, and the depletion of food and nourishment wreak havoc with the pioneers. While she gains in strength physically, Rachel's heart struggles to keep pace. Reverend James Richards is the handsomest manon the wagon train, but the young physician, Tom Dorland, has a quiet appeal Rachel can't deny.
the "Heartbreak Trail" has claimed many souls...but is will not claim Rachel Butler's.
