It was hard to imagine a more romantic man than Pieter Van der Hoek. From the moment she set eyes on him, in the World Trade Center's glittering rooftop bar, Gretel Drew, the stylish art director of Milady magazine, knew they would wed. What she would soon learn was that Pieter and his ancestors before him back to the seventeenth century- owned an island in New York Harbor: It was called Hoek Land, and after a honeymoon in Puerto Rico, Gretel and Pieter went to live there. It was a wonderful home, even though every Van der Hoek bride including Pieter's beautiful Puerto Rican mother had not fared well on the island.

Gretel was not the sort to fear old superstitious like the Cellar Ghost . . . but the menace of El Condor, the shadowy Puerto Rican terrorist group which seemed to hover over their lives, was something else. Gretel begins to realize that she knows very little about her handsome artist husband and still less about his mysterious brother Dirk, who also lives on the island and whom she has never seen. And then frightening things begin to happen around her- a bomb, an inexplicable leak in the gas tank of her boat. Despite herself, Gretel is assailed by a nagging doubt. . . a grim suspicion about Pieter and El Condor.
