I padded across the small rug and found crouched before the threshold a ghastly creature - half man, half monster.
The face that looked up into mine inspired pure horror. It was a nightmare image. a vision of hell. But it was real, all too real, and as it dissolved into the darkness, I knew it would return to haunt my nights and draw me deep into danger...

A SHADOWY FIGURE LUNGED AT ME, slashing out with a knife as I tried to stop it. The blade flashed for an instant in the candlelight, and then, as Rudi's weight threw the attacker off balance, the glittering steel was no longer visible. There was a gutteral sound from Rudi--a horrible, bubbling sound. Then, like a puppet whose strings have been cut, Rudi's powerful arm loosened its grip and his body dripped lifeless to the floor.
For a frozen eternity, Rudi's assailant and I stood in a motionless tableau. Then the murderer came toward me. . .
