Charles takes the family to Denver and is concerned with the health of Wind Fire. He is beginning to limp. Charles seeks help from a highly respected animal doctor. Charles wants to keep Wind Fire as long as he can and refuses to allow them to put Wind Fire down. Charles is contacted by two different Thoroughbred horse breeders and they are offering some of their horses for sale. He makes a trip to Virginia to check out the horses and then continues to Kentucky to check out the other man's herd, and makes a startling discovery. Charles encounters a man being badly beaten by thugs, and jumps in to help. The local sheriff arrests Charles for fighting, and the man Charles was helping is in a coma and cannot say that it was the others' fault, not Charles' fault. Charles takes the train to New Mexico and welcomes Lt. Novell to the Crawford Construction Crew. A Ute Indian Chief comes to the construction camp and asks for help. The Chief advises Charles that the horse he is riding was once his, and was stolen. The ground in Vallejo is finally ready to start planting trees and fruit bushes. Seed is put into the field for crops, and Charles is hoping that the season lasts long enough for the plants to mature. Charles discovers a tree farm that has a limited number of nut and fruit trees available and decides to talk to a specialist that knows how to grow trees from seed.
