My father grinned. “I told you she had spirit. Brown Beauty put every ounce of effort into bringing me here. I rode hard, but kept a steady pace to reserve some measure of strength in her legs, should a quick getaway be needed. It was. Though the moon lit the road for a fast track, it made me visible to ambush. I'd almost crossed over Charlestown Common towards Cambridge when I spotted two officers on horseback, hiding in the shadow of a tree. I'd reached the narrowest part of the road, so I was close enough to see their holsters and cockades. One started his horse towards me, while the other raced up the road, probably to head me off. But I turned sharp around and rode at full gallop for Mystic Road. My confidence in my horse never faltered.”
Pa turned towards Mr. Adams. “Take my word, Samuel: a good Yankee horse, light-footed and vigorous is far superior to any British charger. I gave Brown Beauty her head, and when the sound of hooves faded behind me, I risked a backward glance to see the officer's charger mired in a pool of clay. “They never fired their pistols?” I asked.
“No, Son. Neither officer discharged their weapons, much to my amazement.
