The Darcys and the Bingleys, along with accompanying sisters and cousins have removed to their London houses for The Season - for as long as Darcy can tolerate it, that is. He has reluctantly agreed to the visit on the understanding that it will be only until the end of June when they can all return to the peace and quiet of the countryside where he can have his house and wife all to himself.
Regrettably, the marriage of the youngest Bennet sister, Lydia Wickham, has caused not a few problems for her family but she can now, due once again to Darcy's intervention, boast of being the mistress of a good house in Brompton as well as having her own servant. Of course, it is nothing near as grand as those houses of her sisters, or even of her parents, but there are other reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Her husband, the notoriously indolent George Wickham, has declared his intention of working for his living. Lydia's family certainly hope him to be in earnest; to know their sister is finally secure and content in her marriage would be a relief indeed. Now; if she could only make her husband fall in love with her.
Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Lydia or her family, Wickham's long-time love has returned from America and is back in London within easy reach of him, should she wish it, and that lady's power over Wickham is far greater than Lydia's has ever been.
