Stella Norstadt thinks she's making a sensible decision when she gives up her dream of becoming a Broadway star and takes a job as private secretary to Jane Fairfield, a wealthy widow. But from the moment she sets foot of Mrs. Fairfield's scary old mansion in upstate New York, Stella encounters more drama than she could ever find on a mere stage. Not only does she fall in love with George Chandler, a magnetic young guest at the house, but she is strangely chilled by rumors that the ghost of Jane Fairfield's husband stalks the place at midnight. Soon Stella sees the ghost herself. And a terrifying ride in the dark with a moody chauffeur, a murder, and other ominous events convince her she ought to leave. But by then it is far too late for Stella.
