When the pretty and efficient Alison Mead arrived at Hurricane Haven to work as a confidential secretary for the recluse boss of the Frick Oil Company, Jonathan Frick himself, little did she know that the pattern of her life would be completely changed.

Besides working with Jonathan on a complication of the early days of the oil industry, she began to develop a friendship with his son, the talented and handsome Barlow, who had achieved some success as a mystery writer. But soon her newfound happiness with Barlow was threatened by his jealousy of her close work with his father, the gossip of the Mexican servants, and the antagonism of Mrs. Willows, the family housekeeper.

The advent of a tropical hurricane brings matters to a suspenseful climax as Alison is suddenly faced with a new problem; a fight for survival.
