James and several companions also search for the lost captain of Midnight, guided part way by a savage man called Bear, and fight for their lives in a subterranean volcanic civilization of barbarians. Their quest and life transforming adventures finally turn to a search for home, aided by Abigail and the women of the Port of Jossandra.
