Medicine was more to Doctor Alice than a career. It was her contribution to humanity, a means to relieve suffering and restore happiness. While her husband was living, he gave her his complete understanding and sympathy so that she continued her practice. When he had gone, her profession brought consolation and helped her to adjust.

But Jan, young and beautiful, Alice's only child, hated doctors and medicine. She felt secretly that her mother had given more to her profession than she had to her daughter. When Jan returned from college, Doctor Alice was baffled by the girl's attitude.

Young Doctor Edward, Alice's assistant, further complicated the situation by falling in love with Jan.
