Verbruggen, a wealthy banker, has been receiving letters that hint at the kidnapping of his only grandchild. The mystery unfolds in old Wester Church during the child's baptism. Verbruggen has arranged for DeKok to be one of the spectators. After the ceremony, a woman's fainting sets off an almost gothic chain of events for DeKok to sort through.
