Gordon Fryer finds employment as a scientific guinea pig and assistant to the scientist Dr. Royd. But the result of the experiment predicts the hour and day of his death - a mere thirteen years hence. Fryer makes a deadly enemy of Royd's butler, Blessington, who targets him with poison-pen letters. And when his campaign culminates in attempted murder, he is imprisoned.
