Kathleen Neville's Chinese-Anglo heritage is more a burden than a blessing. Neither the Chinese nor the British accept her and her only friend, Robert Neville, pirate, rogue and British aristocrat, is determined to raise her as a proper British lady. But Kathleen is on a mission to bury her mothers bones in homeland China.
While journeying to China on Roberts ship, Kathleen realizes she's in love with him. But her heart isn't hers to give until she's free of the debt owed to Lord Temojen, the Khan who was betrothed to and betrayed by her mother.
Lord Temojen, however, has his own agenda. After kidnapping Kathleen from Roberts ship, he makes her his royal concubine, hoping for a son and heir he's been denied these many years. Temojen is pleased by Kathleen's beauty and her feisty character. For the first time, Temojen is in love and its with the wrong woman; for after she bears his child, duty forces him to send her away.
Kathleen sails to India, her heart broken. As her spirit mends, shes taken by an Arab sheik, Rashaad, who makes her realize she's a woman meant for life and passion. As she learns of Roberts pending betrothal to an English noble lady, Kathleen becomes determined to live life on her own terms. It isn't until Rashaad is wounded trying to save her from disaster that she realizes she truly cares for him. But there is an even bigger shock to come.
