Alex introduces Matthew to his friend Lucy. She is strikingly beautiful and Matthew falls in love with her unaware of her troubled past. Sadly in his infatuation he ignores the social gulf between them and their radically different attitudes and goes on to marry Lucy.
After graduation Matthew agrees to help Alex renovate an old farm in Brittany. On arrival he finds Marcia who is not only a gifted artist but is also engaged to Alex. Matthew and Marcia, both creative souls, grow closer becoming intimate friends.
