Odd things began to happen as soon as Kerry Loden, a red-haired, jade-eyed medical student, met the mysterious Vanessa Waring. Vannie was also a medical student at Williston General, a bustling city hospital and proving ground for white-jacketed interns. It was one of the handsomest of the young doctors, Kerry's childhood friend Dr. Gene Reynold, who pointed out to her that Vannie seemed to be dressing like Kerry's twin.

Then a hulking stranger began to dog Kerry's footsteps and stand a nightly watch beneath her window. Kerry wondered whether to unburden her increasing fears on Chuck Cranston, the archaeology professor with the boyish grin whose special interest was unearthing Indian relics. She felt that she was deeply in love with him, but Chuck had little enthusiasm for her pursuit of a career as a doctor. Although Kerry truly loved medicine, her lifelong interest in archaeology had always run a close second.

But when Kerry began to hear the sounds of an eavesdropper in her apartment stairwell and then was approached by a threatening stranger, she realized that she must turn to someone for help.

Yet someone was desperately turning to Kerry for help. In the middle of the night Vannie appeared at her doorstep, fleeing from some unnamed peril. Like a vast and fibrous web, Vannie's past entangled Kerry, Chuck, and Gene in a bizarre crime, a desperate plight from which the only escape might very well be death!
