Rebecca, who is a beautiful half-Jew, is one of his fellow travellers and they strike up a rapport with one another, which ultimately has fateful consequences for both of them in the dying days of the Third Reich. It is on the streets of Berlin and then on the streets of Prague as its German garrison fights Czech partisans that the novel reaches its heartfelt climax. However, many years later....
