Set in 1960s and '70s. Now married to her childhood sweetheart, Ian Sinclair, Bess Bennett is blissfully happy - but for the rivalry between her two beloved sons. Dickie, the elder, is the son of Bess's first husband, Greville Philipps, local landowner. Julian, the younger, more artistic of the two boys, was born of her marriage to Ian. As they grow into manhood the jealousy between the two hardens into something stronger, which threatens to destroy everything Bess has worked for - particularly when Dickie, heir to the Philipps estate, starts a relationship with Katie Wright, the attractive daughter of his mother best friend. Bess refuses to accept that her son Dickie is courting a farm-worker... They're keeping their relationship a firm secret as he is the heir to one of the biggest estates in the county and she is working class. Meanwhile, Bess's parentage is threatening to destroy her own marriage too and it seems that it is only tragedy that can save the family.
