Collected Short Stories

Death is not the end, moans the Graveyard Wind. Thus ends this collection of short fiction by H. R. Williams. Many of these stories have won numerous awards and were featured in magazines across the country and in Canada. Divided into six segments, they feature human dramas told in the lyrical manner that is always present in Mr. Williams s writing. The stories cover a wide spectrum and range from Boss Daniels, a story about a solitary man s life changing encounter (or re-encounter) with a woman, to The Children s Orchard, which is a ghost story. Quite a few of these tales take place on Crowley s Ridge, hence the title. There actually is a Crowley s Ridge, which is a long, narrow elevation running from the Missouri Boot Heel to Helena, Arkansas in the south. Here, H. R. Williams was born and raised and this line of hills serves as a wellspring for his writing. As the author once said, William Faulkner had his Yoknapatawpha County and I have Crowley s Ridge.
