Amelia Ling leaves her home in Ireland to take the post of chaperone to Delia and Madeline Wilmot, twin daughters of the rich widower, George Wilmot, at Mayfield, their lovely home in the heart of the English countryside. Amelia at twenty-two is not all that much older than the girls but accepts because the family needs the money. She goes to Mayfield with every intention of doing her best but from the first she is thwarted and upset by Delia's spite towards her for Delia had not wanted her there and is determined to be rid of her. John Preston, the young estate manager, is attracted to Miss Ling from their first meeting but the path of true love runs far from smooth for him by Delia's spite and also by the arrival in England of a friend of Amelia's, handsome, Irish, charming and a poet!

Love is in the air, all summer, at Mayfield, and on to the turning of the year towards winter. By then, marriage is in the air too. Not one marriage but three. Not for everyone, though. There was one at Mayfield John Preston had wished would one day get what the country folk called her come-uppance. She did.
